Composed in Vedic Sanskrit, the Vedas represent the oldest layer of Sanskrit literature and the oldest scriptures of Hinduism.

Vedas are also known as śruti (what is heard) literature distinguishing them from different spiritual texts, that are called smṛti (what is remembered).
